One of my professional goals this year is to find ways to engage families more with students learning. It is extremely difficult to bring families into the school because of distance, language and time barriers. Families live in all areas of Boston. Some students commute almost 2 hours each way to school using public transportation. Families find it difficult to come into the school to volunteer, or even to our Open House night. Parents are often working full-time (some also taking courses at night or with a second job). Some of these hard working families are single-parent households, some with younger children to care for, therefore time is a precious commodity for these families. Another barrier is language. Our families speak many different languages, I often use online translators to send messages, but this resource is limited. "Through PowerMyLearning, teachers learn how to incorporate groundbreaking strategies for engaging families in learning that integrate seamlessly into instructional plans. The PowerMyLearning Family Engagement Innovators Program includes three hands-on online professional development sessions plus access to PowerMyLearning's Family Playlists™, an easy-to-use program that puts students in the teacher’s seat at home and drives content mastery and social emotional learning skills. Teachers who attend the professional development sessions will receive an official Certificate of Completion." (www.powermylearning.org) This platform also comes in many of the languages our student's families speak.
