  • Laser Engraver for Genius Hour

    Funded Jan 15, 2025

I appreciate your support of my classroom, and I am always amazed at the generosity of others. My students are excited to design projects using the laser engraver and share what they learn with each other. I am thrilled to see what my students will do! This project would not have been possible without your support.”

  • A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words!

    Funded Oct 4, 2024

I appreciate your willingness to support my classroom! I am always looking for ways to get more books into the hands of my students, and this grant will go a long way in helping that goal. I want every child to discover (or rediscover) the joy that reading can bring. Many times there is not a big enough variety in classroom libraries to reach every student, particularly reluctant readers. This is why the graphic novels and Guinness World Record books will be such a great addition to my classroom library.

I begin each reading class with 10 minutes of independent reading, and the students love to use the Guinness books during this time. I also allow students to check books out of my library to read at home, and the graphic novel section is by far the most popular. Thank you again for supporting my classroom!”

  • A Sound Investment: Headphones for Success

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

Thank you again for your generous donation to my classroom! In our day of increasing technology in the classroom, headphones are essential to utilizing many of the options we have available. My reading students especially like to use them in order to listen to their audible books during free-read time.

I will also be using the new headphones during our personal narrative unit. Students write scripts, and then create an Adobe Spark video where they narrate their story. Having headphones with microphones makes it much easier to do while an entire class is working on the same project. Thank you again for making these units possible!”

  • Shakespeare for Kids!

    Funded Jan 17, 2024

I appreciate the generosity of all the donors to my project! It is comforting to know there is so much support for my students. My students are excited to be able to add costumes to their Shakespeare plays. They also love having mock swords that are sturdy enough to choreograph a fight scene and look more realistic.

In May, our 6th graders learn and perform 3 different Shakespeare plays: Macbeth, Twelfth Night, and Midsummer Night's Dream. The costumes and backdrops add the finishing touch! This is the perfect unit after end-of-year testing to keep the students engaged. It challenges them to understand Elizabethan language, memorize lines, read with expression, and use voice inflection to help carry meaning to their words. Finally, they get to show off their hard work for their parents! These costumes and backdrop will be used for many years to come. Thank you again for your generosity to our school.”

  • Engaging in Literature Groups!

    Funded Mar 31, 2023

Thank you again for your generous support of my classroom. Giving students choice when it comes to their reading assignments is essential to increasing their buy-in and engagement. These books are greatly appreciated, and my students were already looking at the books to figure out which one they wanted to read next!

When my struggling readers want to read what everyone else is, I provide the audible version of the book for them to follow along with. Now they can also enjoy these novels that they would otherwise not have access to, and they love it! I have a relatively large classroom library, but it is difficult to get enough copies of popular books to run literature groups.

This grant is also providing class sets of Woodsong for our entire grade level. This novel is a great example of a memoir and engages the students in life experiences very different from their own. We can now continue to teach this unit for years to come. Thank you for your support!”

  • Coding With Creativity!

    Funded Nov 30, 2022

Thank you again for your support of my classroom! My students were excited to see the Lego Spike kits arrive and start building their own unique robots. I had one student in particular that had already built a codable robot from a kit but wanted something harder to do. The Lego Spike kit allowed this student to design his own robot, a dog, and then utilized the Lego app to use block coding to manipulate the robot. It was fun to see him experiment with all the supplies and use his problem-solving skills to troubleshoot when things didn't go as expected. He was excited to demonstrate to the class what he had accomplished.

This kit will be usable for many years in my PBL classroom, and that would not have happened without the generous support of donors like you!”

  • Learning to Code for the Future

    Funded Jan 26, 2022

My students were so excited to see the robots arrive! I have several students that are learning how to code, so these items were a perfect real-world application of the block coding they were learning. It was fun to see them set up an obstacle course where they coded their robots to navigate the classroom.

The kit that came with the Dash and Dot was particularly fun for one student to experiment with all the different options. He is far more confident with block coding than when he started. Thank you USBE for providing my students the opportunity to have hands-on materials to learn life skills!”

  • High-Interest Books for Middle School!

    Funded Dec 1, 2020

Thank you for helping me get high-interest books for my classroom! It's easy to suggest books for an avid reader, but when a student does not enjoy reading, then it gets trickier! It's important to have a variety of high-interest books to target a wide variety of students. Graphic novels are a great way to engage reluctant readers as well. They are more willing to try difficult text if there are graphics to support the content. Of course with all of the color graphics involved, these books cost more. Thanks to generous donors like yourself, I can continue to expand my library and keep my students reading.”

  • Charging Station for Tech

    Funded Aug 11, 2020

Thank you once again for your generosity! Cell phones in school are a reality for teachers and it helps to have something that reduces that distraction. My students were excited for me to set up the charging station and wanted to help unbox everything and be the first to use it. Students frequently take advantage of the charging station, and it removes the distraction from their hands and minds! I often have students using it throughout the day, and now have students that don't even have my class coming to use the chargers. It's a simple thing, but one that I appreciate. Thanks again!”

  • Graphic Novels to the Rescue!

    Funded Dec 4, 2019

Thank you again for your generosity in giving to my classroom! I love knowing that my students are being supported by friends, family, and complete strangers. Graphic novels are the perfect way to get reluctant readers engaged in a book. They can still have great depth of content and difficulty, but with the support of graphics, all students have access to them.

This grant focused specifically on nonfiction and historical fiction graphic novels. Textbooks can be overwhelming and not very interesting to my students, but when presented in a graphic novel, they can't put the story down! It is a great cross-curricular tool for my classroom and helps teach my students about our history.

When graphic novels are in full color with so many illustrations, they cost a lot more than your average novel. I have an extensive library in my classroom, but it has been difficult to get a good selection of graphic novels. Thanks to donors like you, it's possible!”

    With gratitude,
