  • Literacy Circle

    Funded Nov 13, 2015

It's been a blessing year using all the materials that you have donated to our ENL population. All of the students have enjoyed them so much in learning. The phonics games are hands-on and engaging. They promote independent learning and cooperative learning to my students. The students are able to work on their chart individually and share with their partners. The games also help them see and understand what they are learning. The sight words activities have helped them read and write extensively.

I use these games a lot with my beginner students who need hands on and visual support in learning. Whenever they see me taking out these games, they are excited! Many of my colleagues have seen me using the games and have all asked where I got them. It is such a great support in my everyday teaching.

During my pull out group, I use these games the most. Often after my lesson, I have my students work in groups on one activity. They have fun, they learn a lot of sounds/words, and they are fully engaged.

I still remember a new student came to my class last week, it was her first day. She was quiet all the time. She tried to participate in most class activities but struggled a lot. The whole day she looked embarrassed and shy. Finally, when it was time to work on the phonics activities, first time ever, she smiled when she was able to figure out some letters. This week, I see more and more smiles on her face especially when she works on the phonics games. It is rewarding for her because she gets to learn something new and is able to do it on her own. It is more rewarding to me as her teacher, to see her smile and know that she enjoys learning.

Therefore, I want to pass the gratitude to you, from the bottom of my heart, from my students, and from my colleagues, that we are so thankful for your donation. God bless your heart!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Yang

  • Printer! Printer!

    Funded Nov 13, 2015

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you again for the wonderful donation (color printer). My students are enjoying the colored printing so much. I still remember when I showed them the colorful printout the first time, they were amazed and some even screamed. To see the excitement on their faces every time tells me this color printer is a wonderful tool to enhance learning.

I have used the color printer to print out student pictures. I love to use their own pictures in the class as a way to manage seating, routines, and group activities. I also love to use their own pictures on the covers of their stories. Many teachers have commented the colorful and creative projects we have done using colored pictures.

In addition, I also like to print colored pictures for hands-on activities, such as sorting and matching games. My students enjoy them so much especially when they see pictures of animals in colors.

Not only my students enjoy the colored printouts, many ENL teachers who share the printer feel grateful for the printer as well. We use the printer every day and in almost all our lessons. I have a student who feels deeply in love with the color printouts even requested if I could print out a picture of her and give it to her mom since they don't have the luxury to afford a color printer at home.

To have this printer in our classroom is beyond more than you can imagine. Not only it enhances teaching and learning, it brings so much excitement to the students. Thank you very much for your donation and God bless for your generosity!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Yang

This year I am working as a first grade push in/pull out ESL teacher. I have more than 70 students who are from different countries and speak different languages; Korean, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, and Arabic, etc. The population in my school is very diverse and we have gotten more Chinese students within the last two years. These students are very smart, but they need the tools to assist them in learning the new language; English. Most of these children do not understand a word of English. They are new to this country. I have to use a lot of songs, gestures, visual supports, movements to engage them and teach the lessons in order for them to understand. Thankfully the school is very supportive of ESL teachers.
