Funded Jun 8, 2016Dear Donors,
Thank you so much for your incredible donations. I just wanted to take a minute to stop by and explain how your donation has impacted the lives of my students.
This year I am working as a Reading/Special Education teacher and I am servicing several different students across multiple classrooms. Some of my students have special needs and a majority of them are English Language Learners, so you can only imagine how difficult reading is for them. We have been using the supplies we have received to work on building our phonics and reading skills. We have been using the small wipe off boards to work on word families (all the words that end in at or ed etc..) so that we can read them in a snap. We have been using the dry erase pockets to work on filling in the missing sounds of words, especially the vowels so that we can recognize them in our books. One of the trickiest parts of reading is decoding which is breaking down our words into smaller parts and then putting them back together to form a word. Many of my students are visual learners so we have been breaking the words apart on the small dry erase boards and then sweep under the words with our markers to put the word back together. It's been great.
When my groups first saw our new supplies they were so excited!! They couldn't believe how many people cared about their learning. They absolutely love the small dry erase boards. At first they all giggled when they saw how small they were, but then they realized how perfect they fit on their laps and they thought that was awesome. They also love how the boards are both dry erase and magnetic. Every Friday we have fun Friday and play literacy games. They love using the dry erase sleeves to fill in their games and they enjoy using the magnetic letters. Today I introduced them to the Wiki Sticks (wax strings) that we use to circle or underline words. They thought they were the greatest invention ever. They loved the way they feel (that's important to some special needs kids) and the bright colors.
Our next steps with the materials you donated is to use our magnetic letters to work on more decoding skills and strategies. The students are really excited to use the wiki sticks in our upcoming guided reading lesson to circle the word family words we have learned. We will also be continuing to use the whiteboards to break apart tricky words. The students really love Fun Fridays and we are in the process of making and finding new games.
Thank you again for all that you have done.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Heather
