I teach at a large urban high school where 100% of our student body are on free and reduced lunch. We are a traditional high school yet I have a lot of creative freedom in the approach I use to engage my students. Most of the students I teach are immigrants from the Philippines, Mexico or of African-American descent. My students amaze me everyday when they share in conversations around a social justice perspective. Some of the themes we focus on extend from reading and writing on these social justice topics in multiple genres from poetry to non-fiction. I like to try to be innovative by incorporating blended learning opportunities that allow for students to continue the class discussions outside of class. Because of the short periods it is vital students continue to think about our important conversations outside of class. My hope is they will find learning continuing beyond the classroom walls.
