  • Quality Headphones Increase Learning!

    Funded Aug 14, 2024

Thank you for supporting my class project giving my students a new set of headphones! It is exciting to watch kids walk in on the first day of school. They look around the classroom, find their seats, look through the supplies I've put on their desks, and notice what's hanging on the walls. On one of my closet doors, I had a new set of headphones for my class, neatly stacked in my re-purposed shoe hanger for a closet. It was part of the multiple systems I have set up in my room that reinforce the organization and smooth functioning of my class. This may seem like a small thing, but the organization helps kids feel safe, like you have everything under control, and they're free from chaos to learn in your room.

For students in the Hillyard area, common items like headphones can pose a financial hardship for families. Headphones that are comfortable, high quality, and sturdy are a must. I've had years where we've used headphones provided by the district, and they break frequently and give the students headaches. I've tried buying earbuds in bulk on Amazon, and they just don't last. The quality headphones you've provided simply remove this annoying issue. I can focus on more important things like curriculum development, and the students can focus on their lessons in class, instead of being side-tracked by headphones that don't work.

I appreciate and am humbled by your help. Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lightbourne

  • Ear ye! Ear ye! Headphones Wanted!

    Funded May 3, 2021

I so appreciate the money I was able to raise for my class set of headphones. My students use them daily in their work with Lexia and Dreambox--our district language and math websites. I also appreciate that I am not constantly replacing cheap, broken earbuds. In past years, I've spent approximately $100 per year buying and replacing earbuds for my students. I finally just decided enough was enough, and experimented with some crowdfunding using Donors Choose. You definitely helped that gamble pay off!

I have many students this year that were in my class last year. When I explained that I used Donors Choose and that my personal friends helped me crowdfund for the new headphones, they said things like, "Wow, Mrs. Lightbourne, you have some NICE friends! Can they be my friends, too?" This was followed by peals of laughter - they are 5th & 6th graders, after all! But they are using them daily, and I'm not getting the usual complaints of the earbuds not working, or that they are uncomfortable, or that they are falling apart. You have helped me buy a quality product that now just seamlessly fits in my classroom.

So again, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. What might seem like a drop in the bucket for some of us has just eliminated a huge headache for my classroom that I dealt with for years. I am touched by your generosity, and my students appreciate your gift!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Lightbourne

Comfortable headphones are a must for students who are spending an increasing amount of time working with technology to acquire their basic skills. Research, writing, and multiple educational programs our district uses require students to use headphones. My goal is to invest in a quality set of headphones for student use that will last me for multiple years. Most years, I buy what I can afford - low quality earbuds that don't last and have to be replaced frequently. With this project, I can make it more comfortable for my class while I teach them the technological skills that will last them into adulthood.
