Our curriculum is phenomena-based and asks students to figure out where food comes from and where it goes next. My students will experience a storyline in which they will figure out what plants need to grow and how the process occurs within the plant systems. My students thrive on experiences that allow for hands-on, in-person experiences, especially when scientific concepts are difficult to see or are abstract in nature. By setting up hydroponic and aquaponic systems in my classroom, my students will get to witness the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration as they occur before their eyes! Not only will my students get to see scientific process in action, they will also understand the care and upkeep required for keeping living things alive and thriving. Many of my students will be able to directly apply their learning and understanding to their own agricultural experiences in our rural district. By contributing to this project, a new, enthusiastic generation of scientists with a genuine interest in improving their own communities will be supported as they continue to develop deeper understandings of the science behind the foods their families produce and consume.
