We are a Title 1 high school and serve incoming 9th graders and transfer students from all 5 boroughs of NYC as well as recently arrived students from Egypt, Hungary, Congo, Sierra Leone, China and Bangladesh to name a few. We like to pride ourselves on having a tolerant and diverse community of learners in a small setting (less than 200 students). Our school was one of the first small schools in the city, and our educational philosophy is based on getting to know all our students well and encouraging them to follow our core values: Respect for humanity, intellect, peace, diversity and truth, and commitment to justice, democracy. Because our school population is so small, we have a very good idea of where our students fall in terms of skills and college readiness. They also spend 30% more time in our classrooms compared to other NYC public schools. Teaching them how to do research and write well is an imperative because they must write and present a research paper to graduate.
