  • Conference Stations and Book Clubs

    Funded Jan 22, 2022

Thank you so, so much for your generous donations. The new tables have changed the entire vibe in my classroom for the better.

They encourage natural collaboration and allow students to situate themselves more comfortably (since the chairs are not attached and they can rearrange them with ease).

They've also made it infinitely easier for me to join different groups; the tables take up less room so there's more open space and I can simply pull up a chair. I've been able to individually help more students per period than ever before and it's positively affecting the class environment and learning.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gull

  • Bringing Mini Lessons to Life

    Funded Aug 16, 2019

Thank you SO much for your generous donations. This table has revolutionized the way I design and run my classroom.

Though I've implemented individual and group conferences in the past, having a designated area for conferences to take place has opened up the way students view and use conferences to deepen their learning. Students now know if I'm sitting at the conference table, it's an open invitation for them to visit and get extended help. Every day I have conference time, I leave with this thought: "This is teaching."

My students love the table and I've already seen it reshape our learning. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gull

  • Books Within Reach

    Funded Oct 10, 2018

I can't thank you enough for your donations! It's been a joy to watch my students eagerly flip through books, create piles of books they want to read, and then scrunch their faces as they try to narrow down their selections. It's painful for them to choose just one book, which is a beautiful problem to have in an English classroom.

When I do Book Talks, students' hands shoot in the air before I'm done, clamoring to get on the wait list. The new selections have energized and revitalized the reading life in my classroom. Thank you so, so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gull

  • Falling in Love: Books on Fire

    Funded Feb 25, 2018

I can't thank you enough for donating these books. It's an honor to teach these rich and deserving texts. These book both challenges and engages my students and, though we're only beginning, have fostered deep and valuable conversations. Students have already discussed the danger of assumption and the importance of owning our own narratives. Moving forward, we will discuss how to practice active empathy in the face of unknown stories, and how to value vulnerability and bravery.

In addition, because the texts are uniquely structured and written, students have examined and discussed WHY the authors made specific writing decisions and, consequently, have become more thoughtful writers themselves.

I can't wait to see their discussions and perspectives continue to deepen as they keep reading. Thank you for making this happen!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gull

  • Falling in Love: Books that Enchant

    Funded Dec 10, 2016

I can't thank you enough for donating these books. It's an honor to teach something as rich as deserving as Everything I Never Told You. This book both challenges and engages my students and, though we're only beginning, has fostered deep and valuable conversations. Students have already discussed the danger of assumption, the importance of owning our own narratives, how to practice active empathy in the face of unknown stories, and how to value vulnerability and bravery.

In addition, because the text is uniquely structured and written, students have examined and discussed WHY the author made specific writing decisions and, consequently, have become more thoughtful writers themselves.

Students have hung after class to discuss the book, which only happens when students are genuinely engaged. Thank you for making this happen!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Gull

  • Chromebook: Removing Barriers through Technology

    Funded Dec 6, 2016

I can't thank you enough for donating to this project. Having ready access to technology has transformed my classroom and the learning opportunities available. While we use the chromebooks during class for writing workshops and learning stations, they've also greatly impacted my time with students outside of class. Previously, when students needed individual help on writing assignments, we'd run into barriers that prevented our time from being as valuable; students would have pieces of their work saved at home or would be resistant to hand-writing papers. Now, we always have computers available which means students can get writing help whenever they want, without worrying about technology access.

Many students have said something to the effect, "Why don't ALL classrooms have these? They make everything easier!" And I couldn't agree more.

Thank you so much for your donations!”

    With gratitude,

  • Read the World: Identifying Assumptions and Bias

    Funded Mar 17, 2016

Adichie demands critical thinking and self-reflection from her readers. By calmly examining experiences she either lived or observed, she took a concept many of my students had only heard in passing and humanized the landscape of feminism. She honed in on the specific way sexism impacts various cultures and illuminated the absolute need for feminism. Her specificity helped students realize that the media's portrayal of feminism is largely demonized and she showcased the many ways feminism helps men and women lead more authentic, meaningful lives.

After reading We Should All Be Feminists, many of my students stayed after to continue discussing the way the book shifted their worldview. A large number of students also wrote me notes, thanking me for making space for important conversations. This would not have been possible without your kind donations, so thank you from the bottom of my heart!”

My classes are full of inspiring and hard-working students. I'm constantly impressed by their resilience and eagerness to learn. I leave work every day energized by their ingenuity and unique perspectives; as much as I teach them, they teach me in return. Thank you for your enthusiasm in supporting education; it's your support that allows these students to have the learning experiences they need to be prepared for the future.
