Creating a classroom coffee shop business will allow my students to practice a variety of functional academic skills including handling money, functional reading skills to process and fulfill orders as well as social skills to interact with customers.
My students are noticeably more engaged during cooking activities and activities where they can have increased responsibility and I see a large reduction in problematic behaviors.
The products I have selected will be the beginning supplies to start our business. These supplies will be important for us to begin making our coffee shop self-sufficient. This coffee shop will also give my students an opportunity to build a more positive relationship with their general education peers. For many of my students, they really want to connect with their peers but have no idea how to bridge these gaps. Being able to deliver coffee throughout our school campus will help my students have a positive impact on our school. They will be able to feel a sense of pride in their work which I truly believe will have a huge impact on their overall self-image, behavior and academic growth.
I have seen what positive impact relationships and responsibility can have for my students and I hope that through this project we can continue to grow and achieve all of our classroom goals.
