Many of our students feel displaced after moving from another country and are unfamiliar with American language and culture. Our school is a public magnet school for English Learners. 100% of our students are classified as EL, and the vast majority of them immigrated to the United States less than 2 years ago. With the help of students, students' families, administrators and teachers we have created a close-knit, highly supportive community where our diverse body of students can feel safe enough to develop their academic skills, socio-emotional skills and English language skills by studying the content areas. Although I teach science, I have found that art seems to be a language that speaks strongly to this student population. I hope to access that through this project.
