Scholastic News & Science Spin for the Win
Funded Sep 13, 2023Of all of the Donor's Choose projects I've ever done receiving funding for the Scholastic News Magazines is by far the most impactful as it's a resource we are able to use bi-monthly all school year. There are a large variety of kid relatable articles that are engaging and educational. The technology extensions really enhance the magazines further and offer students more opportunities to engage with the topic. In one of the photos you will see some of my students celebrating during one of the Jeopardy style quizzes they have. Next month we will be using the magazines to look for text features and creating posters out of the magazine. Thank you again for selecting our class for your donation. We are very thankful.”

Art Supplies and Classroom Enhancements
Funded Sep 21, 2023I hope you are able to see the beautiful art my class made due to your generous donations. (My apologies for having to blur out the student's faces. We had to do that for security reasons.) We just completed our first big art project of the year, just in time for parent-teacher conferences. I'm very much looking forward to showing off our Black Bear Art. With your donation I was able to get real watercolor paper and liquid watercolors that we used to create our paintings. After painting, the class then read about black bears and collected facts to add to our bulletin board display. This project was many students first time ever picking up a paint brush and as you can hopefully see, they did an outstanding job. I'm a very proud that I was able to provide my students with the opportunity to experience learning how to sketch, shade and paint with watercolors. Without your donations, my students would not have had this experience.”

Funded Jan 7, 2022Your donation has gone to good work in our classroom. The first project my students used their Scholastic Magazines for was to search for text features; bold words, titles, captions, maps, photographs. Later they cut out these features and created a lapbook demonstrating all of the different text features they could find in the nonfiction articles. As a report card standard in our school district, these magazines were perfect to introduce and teach this concept. I only wish I had taken photos of the books the students created.
Throughout the year my students have enjoyed reading the various articles. They especially enjoy the online connections Scholastic provides to extend the learning. As their teacher I really enjoy being able to modify the reading level and post specific articles to reading groups. This has been a challenging year coming back into the classroom after having been online for 1 1/2 years. I'm thankful I was connected with you to support my students. Please know your donation has made a difference both to the the kids and myself.”

Funded Jul 22, 2021Your donation has brought a lot of joy to our classroom. The first thing introduced were the Happiness journals and character pens. I allowed them to choose their own journal and pen and they couldn't get back to their desks quick enough to put their name in their own journal. They were actually disappointed that we had to leave for p.e. because they wanted to stay and write in their new journals. Our school is focusing on social emotional regulation and these journals fit in perfectly to allow students a private space to record their thoughts. The additional items your purchased were the "Desk Pets" formally known as food and animal erasers. I'm going to introduce these in January to kickstart the year and have the students complete an application to "adopt their pet." I'm certain this will be another huge hit with the students.
This has been a challenging year for everyone and I just want you to know your donation has brought joy to a classroom of third graders and their teacher. Thank you again.”

Funded Sep 23, 2019I absolutely love the Scholastic News Magazines you purchased for our class. They are colorful, engaging and offer a variety of topics to entertain all of my students. One project we did was to learn about text features and look for them in the magazine. One of the photos shows how the student cut up the magazine after we read it and then labeled the different text features. These magazines are very versatile and come with an online subscription to scholastic which enables me to show related video clips from articles and comprehension assignments. Thanks to your donation my third graders are getting to enjoy reading about real life events each week. One of the articles happened to be about the California wildfires and this topic hit home as my husband had just been deployed there as a firefighter. So, I was able to build upon the article with my own family's experience. I very much appreciate you selecting my class to fund.”

Picture Books for 3rd Graders
Funded Oct 14, 2019I've been teaching for 19 years and it's always such a delight still to see how excited students get when seeing new books. Your donation immediately spread smiles and joy throughout our classroom. My students were eager to get their hands on the books and start reading. As a teacher my favorite part of your donation was receiving the Scholastic Storybook readers. I had never used them before and now am so impressed with the quality of the stories and the online extensions provided. I'm always looking for new ways to engage my students with literature and the readers have something for everyone from fiction, non-fiction to readers theater. When my class asked who bought the books for us, I told them that the gift came from Volkswagen and a very generous person from NY and then we looked at the map to see NY located clear across the country from us. Thank you again for supporting our classroom and teachers through Donors Choose.”

Funded Dec 27, 2018Your donation came at an important time of the year, flu season. I happened to have come down with pneumonia and with my weakened immune system really needed to ensure my classroom was as germ free as possible. The hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes are used daily and much appreciated.
My students were really surprised to learn that they would each be getting their own new toothbrush and toothpaste as well. Many of my students are from very low income homes and this simple necessity for oral hygiene was very much needed. I have never requested items like these from Donor's Choose, but I have to say they are every much appreciated and needed as the books my students read. Thank you once again for supporting my classroom.”

Funded Oct 1, 2018My students were so very excited to see our new books arrive. Immediately they were calling out dibs on certain books. The fairytale mystery books and superhero genres were an immediate favorite. Your donation has allowed for more student choice with book selection within our classroom. The hardest thing as a teacher is to just stop direction instruction and allow for students to simply read. The joy of reading is truly the overall goal and by just allowing my students to choose a book of their interest and spend time reading, I can foster that joy. On behalf of my self and my class, thank you for your generous donation.”

National Geographic Explorer Magazines
Funded Aug 23, 2018My students were able to start off the school year with a new classroom magazine from National Geographic solely due to your generous donation. They were shocked to learn that they were going to be allowed to keep the magazine after we finished studying with it. After we read and completed the lessons for the two articles I got my students started on a project identifying the text features of the magazine. Text features was a new concept to my students. They proceeded to comb through the magazine looking for items like maps, titles, graphs, captions, pictures and hyperlinks. Once they identified a text feature they cut it out and the matching label to create a Text Feature poster. Once these were displayed in the hallway, the compliments began rolling in from other students and staff.
The National Geographic magazines come with teacher lessons, posters and the ability to view the magazine online, so I was able to utilize all of these features with the first issue. It's very rare to receive a full donation for a project from just one donor. Please know your money went to a worthy cause and the students and I appreciate it very much.”

Funded Jan 25, 2018Your donation made it possible for all of my students to go deep with learning about a famous person. It was actually very difficult for them to choose which person to study and we had to flip a coin for a couple of the students who wanted the same person. The students project entailed them reading their novel, completing an organizer, writing an essay, creating a Google Slides presentation, a QR Code and then giving an oral presentation. The bar was raised very high and I'm very pleased to share that the students rose to the challenge. So much of the curriculum I have to teach is predetermined and this time, I was able to create an impactful project that covered reading, writing, technology and public speaking. Please enjoy the pictures of the project and know that it was because of your sole donation that made it possible for these students.”
