Developing Young Scientists and Engineers
Funded Dec 29, 2013My students were so excited to use each of the items you helped our class to receive. They were thrilled to try the geodes, rock kits, magnetic building tiles, and marble sets. They have used each of these items several times. As a teacher, it is so wonderful to be able to see these students so overjoyed about experiencing new learning opportunities.
The rock kits and geodes really brought our rocks and minerals unit to life. It is extremely difficult to make rocks and minerals interesting simply by looking at some pictures in a book. Allowing students to touch, explore, and test properties of actual rocks and crystals really captured their interest. We used this activity as a center in the classroom, and the students were literally counting down the days until it was their turn to participate in these exploration activities. This really helped them understand the content of the unit as well.
The building sets have allowed for movement in our classroom which my students really need. Furthermore, it has exposed them to basic engineering concepts. We have discussed S.T.E.M. careers their futures could hold, if this is the type of curriculum they are drawn to!
Thank you, again, for bringing these valuable learning tools to my students. They are so valuable to all of us. We are so appreciative of your generosity!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Lehman
This classroom project was brought to life by The Leon Levine Foundation and 4 other donors.Developing Reading Comprehension Skills for Young Readers
Funded Jan 27, 2013I cannot even begin to express how much your generosity means to me and the students in my class. My students are absolutely in love with all of the new books, and we use them each and every day in our classroom. We are extremely grateful.
Reader's Workshop allows each student in the class time to independently read books that are of the appropriate level. Before receiving your help, it was very difficult to come up with enough reading material to ensure that each child was being challenged, but could still read the book he or she was given. Now, I have enough books to capture the minds of each young reader in my classroom. We are so lucky!
Also, the sets of books you provided us with have allowed for small groups of students to be able to read and discuss books at the same time. It is much easier for either myself or parent volunteers to work with small groups and hold comprehension discussions with students. This has made a tremendous difference!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Lehman
