I work in a Montessori classroom, ages six to nine years old. They don't have desks or assigned seating, and are given a work plan (to do list) of lessons they need to practice each morning. We gather at the beginning of the day to go over the date, any announcements, take attendance and hand out the work plans. We also gather after lunch for read aloud and for whole group lessons in the afternoon. This is my eighth year at this school, and our classroom meeting spot is getting rather worn. I would love to surprise my class with a nice, new set up for us to gather together. Since we don't have desks, we would also use this space to get our morning work done. Since some of them like to work on the floor, having a nice new rug would really help update the room! We want to work on more food preparation skills, too. A fridge and some kid friendly cutters would help us improve our Montessori practical life skills. These kids have worked so hard and have recently gone through a nightmare of online quarantine, hybrid learning schedules, and on and off school. So many of my students have developed varying levels of anxiety in the last few years. I am having problems with kids attending school regularly this year and have so many overwhelmed kids trying to catch up for lost time. These kids deserve a little extra love this year! Hopefully, these updates will help encourage the kids to get to school and feel comfortable and safe.
