Literacy For My Little Scholars
Funded Feb 5, 2013Thank you so much for your donations to my project, Literacy for My Little Scholars. The students love the Leapfrog TAG Pens and books. The TAG pens sound out and read words and even full books which students are unable to read independently. This fosters a sense of independence in my young students and also helps them practice decoding and comprehension skills without the help of an adult.
My students use the TAG pens and books during our Literacy Center block. During this seventy-five minute block my students rotate through five different centers which reinforces a concept or allows them to practice a literacy related skill. The TAG reader pens are now our permanent reading center. Each student in the center has their own TAG pen and book box which they can use for the 25 minutes they are in the center. They do their best to read the words and then have the pen sound out the words they get stuck on. Next, they listen to the whole book to allow them to focus on comprehension. Finally they get to play the comprehension or reading skill games in the books. They love those!
While in reading center my students are focused, quiet, and engaged! They are able to read roughly two books during this time. Prior to having this center my students would read reading textbooks and struggle to get through just one book. Often times they would not be able to summarize or re-tell what they read because they were unable to read some of the words. My struggling readers had to read books with very little content that did not excite them. Thanks to your contribution my students are able to read books that excite them, teach them vocabulary, and allow them to practice comprehension skills. My students fluency rates have increased significantly this quarter. Some first graders are reading at the rate of an end of the year second grader! In addition, my students are able to recall many more details and story elements when reading independently. I am confident I will continue to see the positive impact of these books on my students' academic success and behavior for years to come. Thank you for generosity and support of my students.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Ahmed
Books, Books, Books
Funded Mar 15, 2013I can't thank all of you enough for your generosity and support. As a first year teacher it has been difficult to grow my classroom library and although I have acquired a small collection of books I have not been able to personally select the books I feel will interest my students the most. To be able to add these books to my library means a lot to me and I am so grateful that you have made this possible. I cannot wait to introduce my students to series and authors that I loved as a child. Your generosity will positively effect twenty-one of the sweetest, cutest, and most creative kids and many more in future years. Thank you SO much!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Ahmed
