Tinkering Towards Confidence and Curiosity
Funded Oct 30, 2024Since receiving your donations my students have been able to tinker to their hearts delight. We were able to unpack the boxes and create an organizational system for the new materials. Students got a chance to explore all of the circuits, batteries and tools and began developing plans for what they were going to build. They were so excited to have so many choices.
In the time since everything arrived my students have created working circuits, made cars, and done lots of exploring with the drill and other tools. They are looking forward to continuing to design and build and also apply their new skills to other parts of their lives. These tools are a huge difference maker for us.”

This classroom project was brought to life by Con Edison and 6 other donors.Literacy Lab
Funded Mar 9, 2016Dear Generous Donor,
The materials that were donated to the "Literacy Lab" project through Donors Choose are being thoroughly used...even as I write this I have a student doing some independent practice using the letter blocks during his lunch! The markers and pencil sharpener are in every day use by all of my students, myself and even other teachers. Every morning I am able to sharpen all of the pencils for my first period so that we are able to get right to work-rather than having to find a place to sharpen pencils.
When my students first saw that we had a whole box of Mr. Sketch markers-they were so excited! Before the donation I had one pretty rough looking collection of markers. My students create posters and other projects and the new markers have inspired some fantastic illustrations. The pencil sharpener has become a source of pride for our classroom and my students treat it with great care-as they know only all too well what it was like before it arrived. Several of my students have really responded to the high interest reading intervention folders. I have been able to create a center for students to self-select reading activities and develop reading comprehension skills.
In my multi-sensory reading intervention sessions, my students are taking full advantage of the letter blocks, the whiteboard and the gel pad. All of these tools have opened doors in my ability to create materials and activities to engaged their literacy skills in creative ways. Since the arrival of the whiteboard, I have been able to magnetize letters and my students have been able to manipulate the letters on the board to create words. For one student in particular, this has meant advancing one grade level in reading in just two months.”

Help Us Cook!
Funded Jan 6, 2009Thank you so much for contributing much needed supplies to this class. These young men are truly learning the meaning of community and the pots and pans will help make their learning real. Your donation provides a tangible symbol of community-that they are not alone in the world and that there is no shame in asking for help. As soon as the pots and pans are unpacked they will be cooking meal for each other to enjoy. Thank you so much for making a difference”
