Something Wicked This Way Comes: Classroom Set of Macbeth
Funded Aug 15, 2019I truly appreciate you contributions to our class project. Our students are familiar with Shakespeare, but I want them to go beyond basic comprehension. I want them to see how timeless classic literature really is. I want my students to discover new insights about themselves and about society. Shakespeare was able to capture the essence of the human experience, and with humor and tears, he makes us more aware of our place in this universe.
Students will be able to explore Macbeth now through a parallel text. This line by line translation will be the tool they need to adapt to the rich language of a Shakespearian drama. This will build their confidence and allow them to explore and analyze the story.
We begin this unit in a matter of days, and I am already looking forward to watching their light bulb moments of discovery.”

Reading Takes You Places
Funded May 7, 2014Within twenty-four hours of the package, two young adult novels were already checked out and being read. Students were excited to see the arrival of books and couldn't wait to pick a selection for themselves.
So far, the books are being checked out and passed around for independent reading; however, within the next few weeks, I hope to start an after school book club. I am hoping children who don't usually read will see the value of literacy and will begin enjoying various form of literature.
I am so thankful for this project because it allows students to experience a novel on their terms and to think for themselves. The titles I selected also facilitate ongoing discussions between my students and me. Deeper connections are forming, and this is causing us to learn more about each other. It is so much more than young adult novels on a shelf.
Thank you again for your generous contribution to my classroom.”

Integrating Current Events into the English Classroom
Funded Aug 27, 2014You are just amazing! My students and I are overwhelmed by your generous gift to our classroom. The New York Times Upfront magazine is an incredible resource for my Journalism and English IV classes. The students appreciate honest, unbiased articles on stories that they can easily relate to.
There are so many ways I plan on using the magazine. For some classes, it will be used for independent reading. For some classes, I will be using the lesson plans provided by the publisher, and for my Journalism I classes, it will open the doors to analysis, dialog, and and reflection. I cannot wait to begin to use the student edition app. It includes games, maps, charts, and videos. This is a perfect tool for small or whole group instruction.
I wasn't a journalist, but I did work at a paper for several years, and I understand the power and responsibility that comes with being a member of the press. This magazine will hopefully open the eyes of several future professionals and allow them to see their own potential.
Thank you again for your generous gift.”
With gratitude,
Mrs. Murphy
