  • Knifty Knitters Needed for Nifty Kids!

    Funded Mar 6, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous gift of round knitting needles for our Knitting Club. As you will see from the student thank-you letters, the club members are thrilled! They are so excited to learn a new way of knitting, and I know we will spend many happy hours knitting and learning together. I plan to have them make gifts for friends and family, as well as knit for charity. I hope that they will leave our school having learned a skill for a lifetime. Your kindness has made that possible, and it is greatly appreciated.”

  • Play to Learn: Board Games Needed for Struggling Readers

    Funded Nov 30, 2010

I am so very grateful for your generous gift of board games for my classroom. My students are so happy with their new games! As I am sure you know, students who struggle with reading tend to struggle as well with motivation and engagement. However, having the board games to use as part of instruction has been so helpful with this issue. We have begun to use them in class and I can already see improvement in their motivation to learn reading skills. They are more willing to try to practice new skills with workbooks since they know they will also be able to practice with board games. It has truly made a difference and we greatly appreciate your help. ”

  • Motivating Workbooks Needed for Struggling Readers!

    Funded Jan 4, 2011

Thank you so much for your generous gift of workbooks for my students to use in reading intervention class. They have really enjoyed the colorful and engaging format of the books, as well as the high-interest topics in each book. We have learned about Alaska, frogs, poetry, Aesop's fables, and many more important and interesting subjects. "Are we using our workbooks today?" is a frequently asked question as students enter the room, and they are very pleased when the answer is yes!

These workbooks are helping my students improve their comprehension and their test-taking skills. I can see them getting better at reading and understanding with consistent practice, and I so appreciate that you have given them that opportunity. On their behalf, thank you!”

  • Listen to Learn: Audiobooks Needed for Struggling Readers

    Funded May 23, 2010

Thank you so much for the audio-books that you donated for my students to use in reading intervention class. We have listened to some of the books as a class, and others my students are reading individually. They especially loved the Junie B. Jones series and the Magic Tree House series, which we read as a class. "Are we listening to our book today?" was a daily question while we were reading those, and an affirmative answer was met with cheers and smiles!

Listening to audio-books has been shown to improve students' listening comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. I can already see the difference in these areas for many of my students, as well as a great increase in their love of reading and interest in books. Please know how much of a difference your generous gift has made and will make to my students and to students who come after them. On their behalf, thank you!

    With gratitude,

  • Cassette Players Needed for Struggling Readers!

    Funded Apr 9, 2009

I so appreciate the cassette players that you donated for my students to use as they read their audiobooks! It has made a huge difference in my remedial reading classroom to have these tape players. Now, students are able to read the books they want to read, and they do not have to wait until a tape player becomes available. In addition, we have been able to upgrade all students to the brand new players, and technical difficulties are now rare.

Audiobooks have made a huge difference to my students' engagement in reading. They are truly motivated to read their audiobooks and they greatly enjoy our daily audiobooks time. The new cassette players have made it possible for more students to participate, and for audiobook time to run much more smoothly.

    Many, many thanks!”

Many of my students feel like failures when it comes to reading. They have had such a hard time learning to read that many have almost stopped trying. For these students, becoming a proficient reader seems like a goal that is far beyond their reach. At our school, we go above and beyond to ensure that no student gives up and that all students learn to the best of their potential. We work hard to give our students the best preparation we can for high school, college and the world beyond. For the students I teach, however, even more help is needed.
