Funded May 11, 2023My students and I are thrilled to have received these materials for school. They are currently working on creating maps about each state in the US. When I showed them the art supplies and materials available to them, they were very excited to begin. Many students mentioned they haven't been able to use sharpies or art supplies in several years.
I am planning to use the rocks for a fun end of year art project incorporating history as the theme from what they have learned this year.
The pencil sharpeners have been put to immediate use as we haven't had a working one for several months. Once again, my students and I are so incredibly grateful for the gifts you have given to us.”

Funded Dec 17, 2021Thank you so much for funding this project!! My students are loving the book so far. We started by studying the location where the story takes place (New York and Afghanistan). Most students had heard of New York, but knew nothing about Afghanistan. I then taught them about 9/11. We watched videos about that day, read historical accounts and for many students, this was their first time learning about it.
In my class, we read the book together in class. We read a chapter about each of the two characters each week. Students then engage in conversations about those chapters in their writing activities and in packets about the story's theme/language/setting/etc. I even have a few students who went out and bought their own copy because they didn't want to wait to find out what happened next as the chapters often leave off on a cliffhanger!
Many of my students are very engaged in this book. I have noticed that the boys especially are relating to the themes in the story about the character Brandon. Many of the girls enjoy reading about Reshmina and the hardships she encounters as a girl living in Afghanistan. So far, it is a huge hit and I even have one student who wants to buy all the stories written by this author because he loves it so much!”
