  • Please Provide Our Students With Headphones

    Funded Feb 17, 2019

All good things come to an end, and so it is with our school. This is Centennial's last year in the district, so this project, funded by your generosity, is my last DonorsChoose project. This project has helped students do independent online study. We have used videos to learn about the Hero's Journey archetype, Shakespeare's stagecraft and traditional folk tales. This has added new dimensions to learning resources.

I have chosen to retire in this my 24th year of teaching in urban public schools. The headphones you have provided will be sent to the new school most of our students will attend next year. I am sure they will be a welcome addition to those students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Green

  • Help Us Get Inside The Outsiders

    Funded Nov 17, 2018

Readers make for leaders. Your gift to buy the S. E. Hinton novel, "The Outsiders" is now being taught to a group of future leaders. The novel describes the lives of young people not all that different from our students in that they do not have the advantages that others have in the way of money and family support. They have to battle just to survive. However, survive they do.

It is my hope that my students will learn from the characters in this novel and learn how to succeed in life. I hope that they also discover the joy of reading and make reading an important part of their existence.”

  • Help, We Are Running Out of Copy Paper!

    Funded Dec 14, 2018

Your donation of copy paper arrived just in time for our students. We have been able to make copies of readings, assessments, and practice sheets. Our science teacher has been using copies in her classes due to the fact that the state adoption for new books have been repeatedly postponed due to budget shortfalls in our state. (In fact, new books arrived just last week, and we are nearly 3/4s way though the school year.)

You have been a real lifesaver for our students. Because of you, the teachers have adequate stocks of copy paper for this school year.”

  • Send Our Chess Club to a Tournament

    Funded Oct 18, 2018

With your generous donations we have been able to go to two chess tournaments giving our team members something they will take with them the rest of their lives. We have actually managed to score some victories, taking a 2nd in one tournament while one of our members received recognition for winning the majority of his games. We have 3 more tournaments scheduled. I have been fortunate enough to secure enough funding so that we will compete in these tournaments also.

You have provided the seed money for our team to take its first steps in chess competition.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Green

  • Help Our School Chess Team Play Better Chess

    Funded Oct 24, 2018

Thank you for your support of our school chess club. Our players have been to three tournaments so far this year. Two of them were out of their hometown. So one of the benefits of the club is giving them an exposure to other places and other people. They have made some new friends whom they would not otherwise had the chance to meet.

They also have learned the skills that chess can teach including patience, critical thinking, and sportsmanship. They now know that they need to plan ahead if they are to be rewarded.

It has been my privilege to be their sponsor and mentor. I thank you for making this happen.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Green

  • Help My Students Get the School Supplies They Need

    Funded Aug 9, 2018

In this time of education funding shortfalls, your generosity is needed all the more for school's like mine. Do to your donations my students will have the basic equipment, the pens, pencils, paper and so on, that they will need for this school year.

Most of my students come from poor and working class families who struggle to provide their children food, shelter and clothing. Our school has been supported by those who can provide for my students need, things like food and toiletries.

You are a part of all of this. Your gift of school supplies fulfills a big need for those who attend our school.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Green

  • Healthy Snacks for Hungry Kids

    Funded Sep 11, 2018

Thank you from the grateful students in my classes. The snacks your donations supplied are much appreciated. They provide a "brain boost" during the school day. For too many of our students, the school provides their meals, and these little treats help them stave off hunger pangs so they can concentrate better and learn more.

The students love the selections they have in the snack package. Their eyes light up when they find their favorite foods. They are glad that someone cares about their lives enough to provide treats for them.”

  • Making Shakespeare Accessible

    Funded Jun 2, 2018

Thank you for supporting our students with your donations. William Shakespeare's plays are foundational to our culture. Unfortunately, Shakespeare's language is very difficult for high school students to grasp. The parallel texts of the play "Romeo and Juliet" will give my students a way to get into the text.

I plan to have students work with both versions and do a critical reading of this play. They will practice the skills that active readers use to understand great literature.

Thank you again for giving my students a way into William Shakespeare's play.”

  • Help Start Our Flag Football Team

    Funded Nov 29, 2017

Your flag football equipment has been an instant hit at our school. The students play out in the sunshine and get some fun exercise. The teams have both males and females. The girls play well when there is no contact. This also gives students who otherwise lack the physical equipment that varsity players have the chance to realize their dreams of playing on the gridiron.

This football coach is happy with the fact that players are able to practice their skills without risk of injury. The principal is happy that our students are getting physical activity in a safe manner.

    Thank you for your support.”

  • Exploring the World of Migrants

    Funded Oct 26, 2017

The value literature has for young minds is that it allows them to explore the world from many different points of view. Your donation allows them to understand the world of migrant workers. In "Under the Feet of Jesus" by Helena Maria Viramontes, the young protagonist, Estrella, works in the fields with her family making barely enough money to keep them alive. They work long hours in brutal conditions and live in an abandoned barn they happened to find. Estrella learns to overcome the obstacles of her life through her courage and perseverance.

Many of my students face obstacles as great as hers. By understanding Estrella's life and that of her family, they too can find a path through life.”

All adolescents face life challenges. Those from poor and working class families often face enormous challenges. These students go to my high school.
