Virtually every child, all over the world, plays. Researchers and educators know that play benefits the development of the whole child across social, cognitive, physical, and emotional domains. Play is such a critical component to healthy child development that the American Academy of Pediatrics (Ginsburg, 2007) issued a white paper on the topic, the National Association for the Education of Young Children (2009) named play as a central component in developmentally appropriate educational practices, and the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights (1989) recognized play as a fundamental right of every child. Yet, while experts continue to prove the importance of play in children’s lives, under the pressure of rising academic standards, play is being replaced by test preparation and worksheets in early childhood classrooms. I want to set up a Kindergarten classroom where children can learn to play and play to learn. I am seeking materials that will engage young learners. I need blocks and paint for students to design and create, magnifying glasses to investigate, kitchen supplies, animals and dolls for imaginative play, puppets for telling stories and more. As they play, students will be reading, writing, counting, comparing, problem solving, and working cooperatively. Help me inspire school-wide, district-wide and city-wide change for early childhood education.
