This is what happened to my first grade students. I was not hired until day 13 of the current school year. Until that time, my students were in a 1st/2nd grade combo teacher serviced by a substitute teacher. The substitute teacher had borrowed basic supplies from the first grade teacher next door and was teaching the bare bones to these children when I arrived. I have spent as much as I can afford making the classroom look like an inviting learning environment. I called on fellow teacher friends to help with paper and the walls of the classroom. The parents have been extremely understanding. Through a school-wide walk-a-thon fundraiser, I was able to purchase much needed basic supplies such as pencils, crayons, folders, and Kleenex. I recently purchased the Charlie Brown Christmas tree, and my students loved it so much! I know they would really enjoy having a beautiful rug to sit on!
