I teach fifth grade students from an extremely low social economic area in the state of New York. Most of the students from this area do not live in single family homes. They live in houses that are subdivided into apartments where at times families live in one room. The children often do without all of the things many middle class kids take for granted. With all that these children don't have, they come to school each day with a bright smile and eager to learn. School for them is their safe haven. I want their school experience to be fun and filled with exciting experiences to help them gain knowledge.
