The students in my 5th grade class are as diverse as they are dedicated. Our school is in the center of one of California's busiest and most historic cities. Because of our location, most of our students are second language learners, many of whom are recent immigrants. Much of our classroom instruction requires extensive language scaffolding and visual imagery in order to make 5th grade academic content accessible to them. The students in our class come to school to learn every day, aware and grateful for the opportunity that they have been given to be students in America.
