This year I have begun to implement flexible seating in my classroom. My students LOVE it! (and my old students are jealous). I have realized more and more over the years that forcing our students to sit at their desk all day is not the most effective way for them to work. I have allowed them to sit on the carpet (which can only hold a handful of kids). Most do not want to sit on the tile...too cold or dirty. I purchased some yoga balls for my class and they are in heaven. I only have a few but they all beg to use them. I did purchase some "stadium seats" but unfortunately they all fell apart in the first couple weeks and became dangerous when the metal rods were coming out. I have found my students to be SO MUCH MORE focused and effective when given an opportunity to chose their seat, and how they are sitting! These comfy floor seats are PERFECT for my students. They provide a comfortable (and safe) alternative seat instead of in a chair at their desk. Many students have a hard time staying still at their seat. When they become off task they are not building stamina. This efforts their performance in school. My students can sit anywhere in the classroom that they feel comfortable and and can focus on doing their best. They can use them when working independently, or when in a group.
