  • Connecting History Using Technology

    Funded Sep 23, 2021

Thank you so much for funding my project! Imagine my surprise when in just a few hours I received the email that my project was funded. My renewed subscription to Nearpod will allow me to continue to use a resource that allows my students to be actively engaged in their learning.

    You have made my day!!!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Williamson

  • Exploring Diverse Voices in History

    Funded Aug 24, 2020

First let me thank you all from the bottom of my heart for supporting my project "Exploring Diverse Voices in History". The racial reckoning that was sparked by the death of George Floyd prompted me to begin to plan more diverse voices into the standard state history curriculum to help my students see themselves in history. My motto is "Representation matters!". In order to relate to history students need to see the success and struggles of their ancestors.

With your generous donations I purchased a license for Near Pod which allows my students to go through a lesson at their own pace or as a whole group. Since we are still virtual, with only a few students who attend school face to face, Near Pod has allowed me to create lessons that are accessible to everyone even when they can not attend their regularly scheduled class. Near Pod also has some very well structured lessons that my students have enjoyed investigating. At Thanksgiving we explored the myths and facts that surround the holiday. For many of my students this was the first time they learned the impact of the arriving Europeans on the Wampanoag of the region. Before the Winter Break my AP US History students began a series of lessons focused on people they should know from the Civil War. The students had a great discussion of Frederick Douglass' Narrative and a comparative of the lives of Abraham Lincoln and Harriet Tubman. I ordered additional books for our class library but being virtual, students can not borrow books. I can't wait for the day I can spread out my books and allow my students to explore history through alternate texts.

Again thank you for your generous donations. Words cannot express how this project has impacted my online teaching.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Williamson

  • History Is Lit!

    Funded Dec 3, 2019

Thank you so much for your generous donations to fund my first Donors Choose project. I originally wrote this project for middle schoolers but then my teaching assignment changed a week after I had submitted my project. What can I say, I work in a public school setting.

However, I was super surprised that my high school students were excited about the titles I selected. We "unboxed" during my African American Studies class. I was so happy I selected some history-based GRAPHIC NOVELS that my students were eager to read. A hands down favorite has been The Silence of Our Friends which is about an incident that occurred here in Houston during desegregation. It sparked much discussion and an extension assignment where the students interviewed parents and grandparents who lived in Houston during the 60s. Having these books added to my classroom library has helped my students understand the power of reading to enlighten their understanding of history.

    Thank you again.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Williamson

What is better than reading a great piece of literature or a graphic novel? What about reading the same great book with your friends. I want to create student selected reading groups, or pods, using young adult literature and graphic novels to help my students understand a variety of themes and content that we explore during our study of history. This selection of literature and graphic novels will help my students to better relate to some difficult concepts such as loss, ethnicity, culture, family separation, and growing up in a changing world. Students will have the opportunity to select books on a broad range of themes and read them with three of their classmates, a pod. This will enable the students to have small group discussions based on a set of literature and history questions. To create their book review, they will act out, rap or draw their favorite part of the book. This will encourage their classmates to select their book for their next self-select reading assignment. By donating to my project, you will not only help my students understand history through literature; they will be "lit"! This project will help my students take what they read in literature and apply it to actual history content. After completing their "pod read", discussion questions, and book review, they will have a better understanding of the primary source materials that will be used to inform our content study. This is a win-win for my students as they will be doing what they love, reading and chatting with friends as they become more proficient young historians.
