I work in a school that is 95% Hispanic. We are 100 percent free and reduced lunch. This translates into a community that is struggling with everyday tasks, such as finding a quiet place to read or sleep. Students who come to me not speaking English have an extra burden to overcome. It is scary and difficult to be expected to know what the teacher is saying when you are still trying to figure out how to say good morning. I hope by the time they leave my classroom they feel comfortable having everyday conversations. I hope they will be comfortable enough to at least try. I Also I hope that when they come back to visit me, we have complete conversations in English, with none of the awkward pauses that used to exist.
