  • Trailblazing Book Clubs

    Funded Oct 21, 2015

The books that you provided had a huge impact on my students this year and will continue to impact future students for years to come.

Your donation allowed us to launch our first book club unit this year in Reading Workshop. Book clubs-- where 4 students read a book together-- are important for several reasons. Students benefit from having other readers who can answer questions or challenge ideas. In addition, it creates another level of accountability for students since they are responsible to their peers for reaching nightly reading goals.

These particular books all contained relevant social issues, and your gift allowed us to teach our students a valuable lesson, one which I did not learn until well after sixth grade: authors oftentimes write books because they see that a group is being treated unfairly in society and they want to right this wrong. This is an especially powerful lesson for our students, many of whom are immigrants and all of whom are living in poverty. These books allowed them to see their lives reflected on the page.

Thanks again for your generous and most appreciated gift.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Kyle

  • We Have The Drive To Read-- Now We Need The Books!

    Funded Dec 30, 2012

Midway through this school year we faced a real crisis. We tell our students how important it is to read every day in order for them to grow as readers and thinkers. We did not have the resources, however, to fuel this level of reading. The books you provided really helped keep Reading Workshop afloat for 90 sixth graders in the South Bronx.

Many of our students do not have access to books outside the classroom. In addition, our school doesn't have a lending library. We simply would not have had anything to put in the hands of our readers if it was not for your generous contribution.”

    With gratitude,

    Mr. Kyle

My students are inner-city children from the South Bronx. Most of my students are Latino, African American and recent African immigrants. My students are passionate about stories. When I read to my students they are enraptured. My students have a very limited understanding of what books are actually out there in the world, however. Most of them have never seen a bookstore. They only see the books that we have for them in the classroom. Unfortunately, our classroom library has lost much of its luster. Due to changes in the economy, we have not had a big influx of books in almost three years. In addition, my school doesn't have a library for them to access books outside the classroom. There is a public library close by, but many students do not feel safe going there. My classroom library is therefore the only option for most of them to feed their reading lives. I know that my students will read as much as any other child-- or more-- if given the chance.
