Good literature can be used in all subjects. Take bats, for example, which is a favorite Halloween subject. The fiction storybook, Stellaluna, is a lovely story and students relate to it well. But as we read, we also learn bat vocabulary and bat behavior. We can use Stellaluna in reading, as we practice mapping stories and talking about fiction story elements. We can use Stellaluna in writer's workshop, as a story starter (many of our students have stories about getting lost, just as Stellaluna does). We can also use Stellaluna in Language Arts to compare and contrast the behavior of bats and birds. Good literature has many uses in the classroom. Having multiple copies of the same book allows for read alongs and partner reading during our reading block; allows for students to have copies they can pull out and reread if they are finished early with work; and also allows students to bring books home to share with their families. We use good literature in so many ways in the classroom that having just one copy of some of our most beloved stories just isn't enough.
