Classroom in Nature
Funded Mar 28, 2014We just returned from a trip that utilized the compasses that you helped to fund. The students are still astounded that people who do not even know them would donate to their cause. This alone, the act of giving opens their eyes to a different world that they are rarely connected with. For that, Thank You.
This last weekend we jaunted out of NYC and into the Catskill Mountains where we used the compasses and topographical maps to plot and follow a course to the top of a mountain. Not only were the students mesmerized by the usefulness and their ability to use them quickly but continued to tell me they completely understood this topic (it is in their Earth Science curriculum) now that they were actively engaged in learning. Being in nature, instead of a classroom, and doing hands on activities really cemented these skills for the students. The most meaning comment that was given to me was, " I learned more on this trip (map & compass skills, the water cycle, how glaciers shaped NY, rock types and the interaction of humans with nature) then I have so far in school this year".
This was in large part to your gracious donation.”

Funded Nov 15, 2012I have finally been able to use your gracious gift with our group of students. We have been trying unsuccessfully to go on our field trip because of weather. Last week we commenced with the jaunt to upstate New York to bring the many elements of class to the outdoors. The students, even though it was 17 degrees with a 8 mile and hour wind chill climbed a small mountain just higher than the Empire State Building!
Many topics were covered on our outing! Science dominated the trip as we discussed the rocks and geological features of the area, stream systems were touched upon as they saw tributaries flowing into the mighty Hudson River and flow south toward the ocean. The history of the area and the history of West Point Academy which was just across the river were covered. When we returned to school we had the student calculating the height of the mountain using the Pythagorean Theorem as well as the trigonometric ratios. To watch as the students were able to use the experiences they gained first hand and apply it to school work is amazing.
The gifts you donated were used as both safety equipment to keep the students hydrated on the challenging climb as well as to disseminate information about health and the function of water in our bodies.”
With gratitude,
Mr. Kouril
