  • Making Memories Through Reading

    Funded Apr 3, 2012

There are books read by young people that stay with them their whole lives. Details about the plot may become hazy after some years have gone by, but the positive impact that a good book has on students does not get forgotten. This is the case with The Black Pearl. This book has made a positive impact on even my most reluctant readers. The characters are strong and the adventure is exciting. My students also learned important themes through this book, such as, actions have consequences and it is important to admit mistakes and try to make amends. The students and I would like to thank you for your generosity, and we want you to know that you have made a difference to each and every one of us.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Goetz

  • Tales to Tell: Tall, Folk, and Ancient

    Funded Apr 8, 2012

What a wonderful addition our new novels have made to our classroom! The students are very interested in the book Black Ships Before Troy. This author has provided a rich version of The Iliad for young people and has used literary devices that help my students to analyze the author's craft. The kids also like the folktale and tall tale books. They are even writing their own tall tales with illustrations! We are so grateful for the high quality books that you have provided to our classroom through your generous donations. Thank you for the difference you have made. ”

  • Whisper Reading to Improve Comprehension

    Funded Feb 7, 2012

Learning to read is a primary goal for my students. When the task of learning to read text is paired with science, my students' desire to read increases. My kids are naturally curious about why things are the way they are in their world. Your generous donations have made it possible for my students to learn in an engaging way. We pair reading with hands-on science experiences. The textbook provides them with the knowledge to understand why their experiments turn out the way they do. We would like to thank you very much for making our classroom a better place to learn. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Goetz

  • Science Plus Literacy Equals Success

    Funded Jan 27, 2012

The students and I would like to thank you for making it possible for us to have these wonderful science books. Your donation directly impacts the students' literacy and science skills. The students use these books to practice nonfiction reading skills, including analyzing text features, maps, captions, and pictures. The students' natural curiosity about the world around them and the high quality of the presentation of information, make this book an effective tool in our classroom. Again, I would like to express my thanks for all you have done for our kids.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Goetz

  • Math Matters

    Funded Feb 7, 2012

The students and I want to thank you for the math books your donations have provided to our classroom. We think they are GREAT!

When the students have questions about a math subject, they don't have to wait for an answer. They use the math handbooks to get answers to their math questions.

Over the years I have found that a percentage of my students will understand a math concept best when they read the explanation for themselves. These learners can often hear an explanation but it doesn't "stick" with them until they read it. These math handbooks are engaging and written so my students understand the concepts.

Thank you again for the impact you have had on my class!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Goetz

  • Back to Basics and Beyond

    Funded Nov 2, 2011

The supplies have arrived, and we are busy using them! The graph paper helps my students stay organized as they work out math problems. They have a much easier time constructing polygons and finding area when they use the graph paper.

We are so grateful for the new pencils and the pencil sharpener that works! Having new supplies us such a boost.

Another great solution these supplies have giving us is a way to keep paperback novels safe. We used the plastic sleeves to put the paperback books in when the students are putting the books in their desks. This is a great way to protect our resources for future students.

Thank you so much for all your support! We really appreciate you and your generosity.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Goetz

  • Inspire Students to Read with Award Winning Books

    Funded Oct 4, 2011

I would like to thank you for your generosity and let you know what a difference you have made for my students.

The students are absolutely loving the books that your donations provided to our classroom. The students' excitement for reading is contagious as even reluctant readers are interested in reading the new books.

These award winning books not only help my students with comprehension and vocabulary building, but they help them learn to love to read. My hope for them is that they will develop a love for reading that will last their whole lives.

You have made it possible for these students and future students to have access to quality children's literature.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Goetz

  • Reading to Learn About the Civil Rights Movement

    Funded May 10, 2011

We are so grateful for your donations that have made our book study possible. The book that we are reading, The Watson's Go to Birmingham - 1963, is one of those books that stays with readers all of their lives. My students are learning about a time in America's past that is also important today.

The students are also learning critical reading and thinking skills. We are analyzing characters and discovering meaning in text that we can apply to our lives. My students are also being challenged with vocabulary words as they make sense of what they read.

This would not be possible without the books. The books would not be possible without your generosity. Thank you again for touching the lives of my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Goetz

  • Fractions, and Decimals, and Percents, Oh My!

    Funded Dec 31, 2010

The BossEcubes, the Rainbow fractions, and the fraction/percent circles are such a valuable asset to our math class. By using the BossEcubes, the students can truly see how the base ten place value system works. They hear about the numbers, but now they can see and touch the numbers. The other very important concept they worked with using the cubes is the meaning of doing arithmetic operations on integers. They were able to understand adding, subtracting, and multiplying positive and negative numbers, and we are continuing to work on dividing integers.

The fraction and percent circles helped them connect the concept of parts of a whole (like time on a clock and degrees in a circle) to fractions and percents. Having the decimal equivalents on the rings also helps them make the connection between decimals and percents.

As you can see, your contributions have made such a difference to our class!”

  • Learning Math Adds Up to Success with HP Calculators

    Funded Feb 11, 2011

Thank you so very, very much! We have started to use the calculators that you provided to us, and we are so excited!

The children learned how the keys and functions worked very quickly. They have practiced order of operations and worked with fractions and decimals on the calculators. The equations stay in the screen so they can see what is happening.

One of the best parts of having these calculators is how they support the students as they solve problems. They can do the calculations, but they need to check the math for small errors. When they have arithmetic errors, it gets in the way of finding the solution to problems.

Another benefit is the use of the calculators in science!

Again, I would like to express my sincere thanks for all you have done for our students. ”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Goetz

The water in your glass could have been dinosaur drool! My students are always surprised to hear that the water they drink is a part of a cycle that has been going on from the beginning of our planet. I teach amazing 6th graders who are curious about the world around them. Many of them do not have the economic resources to widely explore their world, so I must try to bring the "world" to them in the classroom.
