When you walk into my classroom, you enter a room full of students who have faced more traumatic experiences in their young lives than most people experience in a lifetime. 94% of our over 1000 students live below the poverty level and 85% speak languages other than English at home. My students face many challenges in addition to lack of support and poverty, such as shared homes with multiple families, foster care, and crime. The school they attend is over 60 years old with very few updates. We have a library but each class only has 20 minutes per we Our school is no longer allowed to go on field trips which for many kids, was their only opportunity to leave the neighborhood in which they live and learn. My students are like any other, eager to learn, excited at new things, imaginative, loving, and ripe with potential!
