My students are 2nd graders with wonderful imaginations and huge hearts. They attend a low income school in a high poverty and crime area. The school was built in the 1940's for 450+ students and currently accommodates nearly 900 kids. The additional students are housed in temporary classroom trailers that sit where the playground once was. As sad as it is for kids to have such limited play space, it is even more disappointing that during their recess time, they spend much of it waiting in line to use the bathroom as the number of facilities available has not kept pace with the increase in the number of students. Though our school has it's challenges, the students have wonderful ideas and are always eager to adapt and learn under the conditions. Many of the students live in subsidized housing or multiple family households and find their experience at school wonderful! They are truly a great bunch of kids.
