I am a TRUST counselor, guidance counselor, and school social worker serving approximately 300 students in the South Florida area. The children are in 6th through 8th grade, and their ages range from 12 to 15. My middle school students face adjustment issues, peer pressure, bullying and cyber bullying, social isolation, familial issues (including death, alcohol, and drug problems), hormone changes, dating issues, and sexual orientation concerns. Often, parents are too busy, unavailable, or unwilling to discuss these factors with their children or the children are uncomfortable in addressing them with their parents.
