  • New Books for First Chapter Fridays!

    Funded Aug 2, 2023

My students are so excited to read these new books! As soon as I unpacked the boxes, I had students gathered around my desk asking to borrow some of the new titles. "I've been wanting to read this!" exclaimed a student. It was music to my ears.

Every Friday, I spend about ten minutes reading just the first chapter of a book to my classes. The purpose is to expose students to stories they might not ordinarily pick up: to introduce them to books that they otherwise might never read. After they hear the first chapter, I give them a chance to borrow the book from me if they want to keep reading.

Thanks to your generous donation, I have several new titles to read on First Chapter Fridays and to add to my classroom library. Thank you for investing in my students.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ballman

  • Challenging Books for Middle School Kids

    Funded Nov 8, 2012

Thank you so much for sponsoring my project and buying books for my middle school students. Your generosity is making a difference in the lives of these kids.

My students are so incredibly excited to be reading Fahrenheit 451. They know that it is a challenging book and they are so proud that they "get it." Yesterday, after a class discussion, I asked them to write about their interpretation of a passage. One of my students, writing furiously, looked up at me as I walked by her desk and said with a smile, "I totally get what the author means! I know exactly what to write!" Her confidence in herself made my day, and I hope that it will also make your day.

Once again, I thank you for providing these excellent books for my students. I am so very grateful.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Ballman

My students are wonderful kids who face serious challenges. More than 70% of them come from a background of poverty. In our district, 23% of students are English Language Learners. Because of these disadvantages, my students have an especially challenging path to college and career readiness. I want to do everything I can to prepare them for successful adult lives, and part of that is exposing them to challenging literature.
