Our school has begun a new reading program where trade books are used as mentor texts. Although most of the books used in the program can be found in our school library we have multiple classrooms using books. After reading the books to students they need to be returned to the library for other classes to use. In a literacy-rich classroom students need the opportunity to hear a written text and be able to share their thinking with classmates. In having books available to students for long periods of time in the classroom, students are able to make connections and build comprehension.
