Maslow's hierarchy of needs highlights the bottom tier being physiological needs: air, water, food, shelter, sleep, and clothing. While there are four other tiers, this project will focus on meeting the needs of the foundation tier: physiological needs. Students at my school are involved in after school enrichment opportunities which sometimes last until 4:30pm - after being in school since 7:30am. These students are at the school without a snack from their assigned lunch time until dinner time at home, which most students rarely receive. A small snack is important to the diet of students. Snacking reduces stress and improves focus and productivity. These snacks provide energy, decrease hunger, and keep students from overeating dinner. Studies show that when students eat after the school day but before dinner, there is an impact on mental acuity, energy, and overall performance. Just as important as it is to provide extracurricular opportunities to students who need them in order to thrive through their academic exceptionalities, it is also equally important to fuel their brains to maximize their opportunities for success.
