  • "Hear" We Grow!!!

    Funded Feb 3, 2024

Thank you so much for your most generous gift of these portable speakers. Because of the portability of these smaller but more powerful speakers we have been able to hold show choir rehearsals on the stage allowing us to work on our music as well as our choreography. We have also been able to hold chorus rehearsals outdoors in the fresh spring sunshine in our favorite place to rehearse...the stairwell to the gymnasium! These super versatile speakers are always charged and ready to go and with your generosity which enabled us to purchase multiple speakers, the students are able to run sectional rehearsals on their own without gathering around a small, quiet computer speaker. These speakers enable them to be able to sing their parts out loud at full volume.

Our music and technology classes are also enjoying these speakers as they are able to connect their keyboards through them and play along with compositions they have been writing on BandLab. But perhaps the most helpful these speakers have been is during yesterday's eclipse we were able to roll the speakers outside so that the administration was able to communicate with the students and we were able to roll a playlist that we had designed especially for accompanying the eclipse making it a multi-sensory event! I'm not sure how we ever got along without these speakers. Thank you so much!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morrison

  • Can You Hear Us Now?

    Funded Nov 30, 2021

Thank you so much for this amazing portable sound system that you helped to provide for us. It has already proven itself a much needed resource. We were lucky enough to receive this unit a few days before our first outdoor performance in 2 years at our town's Christmas Tree lighting. I unboxed it and charged it up thinking I would have to read the entire manual before we were able to use it. I was wrong. It was so user friendly that we were able to use it the very next day for our chorus rehearsals. Everyone was so impressed with the sound it produced. And it's very light weight, so it is easy for students to set up. The student's were thrilled that it came with a microphone and we enjoyed a day of Karaoke before we took the unit out to our performance. This was where we really saw it shine. Everyone was impressed with how it handled an indoor rehearsal, but an outdoor performance was a whole different beast. This sound system not only rose to the challenge, but because it is also bluetooth compatible the high school choir was able to run their recorded accompaniments through it without covering the soloist who was using the microphone. Usually we would have to carry two speakers and a bag full of wires to get the sound we got from this one very portable speaker. A few weeks later we used this portable speaker along with our high school's in house speaker system at our concert and it handled the speaking solos as well as the singing solos. We even used it to mic a violin solo we had in our finale and I can say with confidence that this unit can handle both voices and instruments with flare! My current (and future) singers and I am forever grateful for this generous gift and we are thrilled to put it to good use! Thank you so much for your generosity.”

  • A Breath of Fresh...Safe Air

    Funded May 19, 2021

Our new air filters were a big hit with all my classes. According to current Covid safety guidelines we are now allowed to sing indoors for 30 minutes for the first time in well over a year. I have noticed that the singers are much more excited about coming to class this year. We have already handed out several new pieces of music which we are sight reading through as well as revisiting some of the music that got cancelled when Covid hit. The singers seem just as excited to revisit the familiar music as they do to embark on the new tunes.

The second week we had the air filters running is when I saw the students fully engage and concentrate on listening to each other to create beautiful music together. We have been singing separately for so long that it took a little while for them to remember or learn that they need to listen to each other in order for the chorus to work. Several students asked about coming in during lunch to do more singing together and many students have already inquired about additional extra curricular singing opportunities.

Having these filters and being able to sing together is going to grow us as musicians. We will be able to forge deeper bonds and represent our school in our community through performance opportunities that are already presenting themselves. We deeply appreciate all that you have given to provide us with these air filters so that we may continue to learn and grow as a chorus and better serve our school and community with the music we missed so much in the past few years.”

  • An Ear-Resistable Speaker for an Outdoor Music Classroom

    Funded Dec 24, 2020

Thank you so much for funding the JBL Charge 4 speaker project I wrote. This tool has helped me reach my in-person learners more clearly on a daily basis. For safety reasons, music classes have been moved to our outdoor space. That means, no electricity, and definitely no sound system. My middle school chorus has done a great job singing a cappella, but is finding it very rewarding to sing along outside with some accompaniments, and my Kindergarten and first grade classes are able to do some serious freeze dancing or listen to some music in our outdoor classroom space. Every day I travel between 3 schools in our district all while teaching "live" to students who sit in front of me as well as synchronously virtual to our "at home" learners. This bluetooth speaker ensures that whether I am in an elementary outdoor classroom or the outdoor high school space, the music we are using for rehearsals can be heard by all my in-person and virtual learners. The speaker has also enabled us to hear the highest quality recordings as we prepare for our performance videos that we are in hopes of presenting in lieu of an in-person concert this year. Those recordings will be posted on our social media pages, classroom webpage, shared with other schools, and performers. We love to share digitally what we are doing in our classroom with family, friends, and other classrooms around the world.

This project is helping us prepare our performance videos and let the students and others see and hear us as we sing our way through the pandemic and beyond! They say a picture is worth a thousand words, well then I think that the work we do with this bluetooth speaker will be worth a thousand songs! We are so happy that we are able to share our music and ideas with each other as well as other classrooms around town, the country, and even the world!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morrison

  • Can You Hear Me Now?

    Funded Oct 6, 2020

When I first wrote the proposal for the USB microphone and webcam it was in the hopes of improving the quality of the videos that I was posting for my singers to rehearse with. I had envisioned high quality audio recordings of accompaniments for my singers to listen to and sing along with as well as demonstration videos showing voice placement and mouth shapes for them to mimic while we rehearsed our music for upcoming performances. Little did I realize how vital these pieces of technology would become to my chorus as well as my other classes as we transitioned to virtual learning due to the pandemic. I can honestly say that without this microphone and camera I would not be able to do my job.

The camera enables my students and I to connect visually every day because the laptop issued to me by my school does not have a working camera. At the beginning of the school year when we were together in the classroom in a hybrid model, I used the camera during class so that those students learning from home could see their friends learning from class. It was almost like being together and helped us forge that all important "chorus bond" with one another. The microphone makes my voice MUCH more clear to those students who are working from home on the computer I've been told.

As you can see from the photos, both the camera and the microphone are being used by every member of my household in every facet from classwork, to gaming, to streaming, to teaching college classes, and recording projects. I am hopeful and excited to share these tools with my own students once we return to the classroom.”

  • Lights...Camera...Music Video!

    Funded Mar 27, 2018

What an amazing gift for my students to have this new video camera at their disposal. In the past we were using a video camera from the nineteen hundreds to record our performances (only!) and then also to play them back in the classroom. There was no way we could upload the videos direct to the Internet, and the mini video cassette tapes were becoming more and more difficult to find. This "vintage" camera also weighed about as much as I do and was a literal pain in the neck to carry around between the two middle schools. We were in desperate need for a technology upgrade but there just wasn't money in the budget to replace the camera.

This new camera has already been a well used tool not only for our chorus, but for the band and strings classes throughout the district as well. Last year all of our performances were recorded BY STUDENTS for each of our performing groups from elementary band to high school strings. These videos were then shared BY STUDENTS digitally and posted on YouTube where they continue to get hits every day. This new camera was used in classes this year to record and play back solo auditions, projects for other classes, tricky sections of music that we were working on, the middle school musical, and even once when a celebrity came in to rehearse with our chorus. All recorded by students and uploaded to our quickly growing YouTube page with the ever increasing hits.

When I originally wrote this project I never imagined how much this camera would connect and resonate with my middle school students. Thank you so much for providing me (and them) with such an important tool!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morrison

  • A picture is worth a thousand songs!

    Funded Mar 9, 2016

This camera has helped us so much! It has enabled us to document activities and moments in and out of our music classroom. It has taken some wonderful pictures and videos of our students performing at field day, a Veterans Day assembly, graduation, marching in a parade, completing an assignment in class, enjoying karaoke in our classroom, and enjoying some activities during the music Olympics. I have personally seen some of our new Kindergarteners looking at the photos that I have taken and printed out and ask some of the older students when they would get to do those activities as well.

This camera is exciting for us to have because it generates an interest in our music department activities by showing the students what we have done and what they have to look forward to. It is also very exciting for us to have because my budget would never be able to cover such an expensive piece of equipment. I am grateful to have it and I am happy to share it with others in my school to use.

Some of the students and teachers have shown an affinity for our new camera and request to be photographed or videotaped during class performances or while teaching. This has proven to be an extremely valuable teaching tool for kids and grown-ups. We are so thrilled to have such a beautiful piece of equipment in our arsenal for teaching.”

  • Karaoke is Reading

    Funded Feb 23, 2016

    Dear Ms., Donahue,

This is just a small token of my gratitude for your generous donation to my classroom. The karaoke system that you contributed to have helped my students become better readers. We have used the karaoke system to help us learn the correct lyrics to songs, to warm up our voices before class, and to accompany us with songs that we have composed. Everyone from Kindergarten through grade 5 has enjoyed singing with our new Karaoke system.

My annual budget is very small and without your contribution we would never have been able to afford such a wonderful teaching tool. It is so important for the students to see that reading doesn't just get to happen in their language arts class; it can happen in the arts classes as well. Some students who are not great readers but shine in music class have shown progress in their reading confidence I am told by their teachers.

Thank you for supporting the arts and donating to my project so that I may help my students and support them in fostering a love of lifelong reading...whether in books or on the karaoke screen.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Morrison

Our school serves middle school students in sixth through eighth grades and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment. As a result, we are considered a "school of distinction" in our district. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school and college, and in life. Our chorus is comprised of 300 amazing students, some of whom come from bilingual households and receive free or reduced price lunch. My chorus students are the most incredible, talented, giving, diverse students who look forward to coming to class each and every day often asking for extra rehearsal time. I am constantly looking for ways to support them and teach them to be better 21st century musicians.
