We are a public, middle school (grades 4-6) in a rural community in Louisiana. Our 214 student population demographics are 56% female and 44% male; 85% free/reduced lunch; 48% White, 47% Black, 4% Hispanic, 0.5% Asian, and 0.5% Native American.
The large organic garden is the result of a community sustainability project designed by the gifted students last year. Through this project, they learn the intrinsic value of philanthropy--the joy of giving from their hard work to those in need. They chose to establish a farmers market for the local community because residents drive 45 minutes for the nearest farmers market. The students also decided to take their community project to the next level by donating all proceeds from their farmer's market to the local soup kitchen ($500 last year).
Now that the garden foundation is established, we are beginning Phase II: broadening the scope to incorporate the ENTIRE school and making the garden self-sustainable through large-scale composting.
