Funded Dec 3, 2014I'm an elementary school teacher, teaching in a Tier I school. Most of the children in this school come from low income families. As a teacher, I want to ensure that each child learns to the best of their potential. When I set up my classroom in the beginning of the year, I knew that my upcoming students had very high reading levels. My library wasn't equipped with the books I needed for them.
During parent orientation, I asked parents for their help in finding any donors to help get our library ready for their children. That's when they helped sign up an account with Donor's Choose. Thanks to you and your donors we now have a great library that my kids use every day.
My students are very avid readers. They love to read. They are reading above fourth grade level. My library wasn't equipped to meet their reading needs. When I told my student that we will be receiving new books in our library, they were over the moon excited. They were telling me which books I should put on my list. It was really nice to see them get excited about reading.
The books have become part of our classroom library. It has its own special location with a sign out sheet. We have it set up like a real library. Students take out books and must return them within two weeks. They have the option to re-sign the book out if they are not finished reading it yet. It also gave us another classroom job, the librarian. Having these books as part of our classroom, gives the students a sense of ownership. They know that parents and donors gave so that they would have books to read that interests them. The students are excited about reading and the teacher is excited that they are reading!”
With gratitude,
