Back to School Safely
Funded Aug 7, 2020It has been such a difficult year for our students to say the least, but receiving these items has brought teachers, students and their family such joy. Our grade made bags of materials that parents picked up before we opened. Inside these bags were the items from our donors. We received numerous messages from our students and families thanking us for these supplies. They were so appreciative of the materials. Many students commented on them in our live sessions and couldn't wait to use them. They still comment today!
During our SEL classes, the students use their journals and reflected on their feelings. We are seeing first hand how the Growth Mindset journals are changing their views of themselves and others. During our live instruction we see them encouraging each other, taking risks and persevering through hard times. These are concepts within the journal. The fidget toy sets have really helped the students combat their anxiety and attention while in class or remote instruction. They helped to replace our peace corner we used to have in our classrooms. Students can take their mobile peace corner everywhere! The lapboards make it easier during live remote instruction because they can share their thoughts and answers easily.
We will continue throughout the year working in our journals. The next steps, students will be leading our discussions using the ideas from the journal. The lapboards are used in a variety content areas and ways. The fidget toy sets will continue come in handy and help them self-regulate their emotions throughout the year.
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!”

Funded Oct 18, 2017I can not thank you enough for your generosity.
So basically these books come in handy for many reasons but especially right now in our classroom. We are doing a unit of study on characters. The students read and get to know their characters in the wonderful books you have donated. We do lessons such as: paying attention to what characters do and say, study your observations to grow ideas about your characters, notice patterns in your characters behavior, create deeper theories, and noticing patterns in their behavior and wants to make predictions. Without these series books in our library it would be so difficult for my students to develop these ideas and learn about their characters.
Reading is a special part of our day. We start off with a daily read aloud in which the children listen to stories I read and get opportunities to turn and talk with their classmates and discuss these stories. Then we have Readers Workshop in which a reading skill is taught by me and then the students go off and practices these skills while they read independently books at their reading levels. Having a variety of books is essential in my classroom because it helps create a love of reading. After they read for 30 minutes they come together and share their reading with their partners or sometimes book club.
I have a small group of low level readers in my class that were waiting for the Henry and Mudge and Katie Woo series. These series book were at their level and they couldn't wait to read them with confidence and build character theories with them just like their classmates were. They can also partner up with each other and share their thoughts because they have books that are easy for them to read and comprehend. After doing our mystery unit all the students fell in love with series books in general. They love following a character or characters through many adventures and books.”

Funded Dec 6, 2012I can not thank you enough for your generosity! Every morning my students are so excited to play these educational games on our SMARTboard. We have covered so many topics in Math, Literacy and Science just by playing. This year they will be taking the NYS ELA and Math tests and I am sure these games have helped prepare my students to succeed.
The city's budget for public schools has been cut this year and next year will be even worse. Thanks to wonderful people like you we are able to have these tools to help enhance classroom instruction.”
