All my students are Hispanic and come from low income families. They attend a Denver public school in Colorado. My students' favorite time at school is when they have access to computers, which is only one week every month because the computer lab is shared by the entire school. This year I am teaching the class with the lowest test scores at the end of the first grade in DRA and EDL testing.
My second grade students' progress is going slower than I would expect. One reason for that is the lack of resources in both English and Spanish. Another reason is that they don't have access to books and computers at home so they regularly don't complete reading assignments at home.
I strongly believe that having new technology in the classroom will encourage them to find and read books on their own.
