"Wonder": Developing Reading Skills and Tolerance
Funded Oct 22, 2016The impact of the novel "Wonder" and the accompanying professional texts that were donated to me and my classes will be ongoing. I am using the professional texts to help develop a unit of study on "Wonder". "Wonder" is a book about a boy with facial deformities who has never been to a public school, and braves his first year through hardships and through triumphs. I want this book to help my students learn to accept differences and people for who they are, not what they look like. While the unit of study will include the traditional content focus of theme, conflict, figurative language, etc., the professional texts included in the donation will also help me to better prepare my students for authentic discussions about reading, a skill that they continue to struggle with and that I continue to struggle to teach. As a reading teacher and a lover of reading, I know the special joy of sharing my feelings about a good book with others. I want the same for my students, but talking about a book with others isn't always a natural instinct. I am so excited for the multiple benefits this book and unit will bestow upon my students and upon me. I thank you from the depths of my classroom.”

Increasing Confidence and Reading Ability: Freak The Mighty
Funded Oct 29, 2012The ability to provide all of my students with a copy of Freak the Mighty was wonderful. I teach students with a wide range of reading ability, and to offer them a book that was interesting to all of them was the intention. I can help them with learning to read, but if they don't like a topic, I really can't make it any more interesting for them. This book was great!
By reading this book, my students not only increased thier overall comprehension and fluency, but they learned the value of teamwork and friendship by following the relationship of the two main characters throughout the book. They learned that even though people may be different and appear "strange" we can all find someone who complements us perfectly.
Thank you for being a part of this!”
With gratitude,
Mrs. McKenzie
