Our middle school has seen an influx of Spanish speaking students over the last few years, and we truly want our school library to include and reflect the languages of all our students. Previously, our Spanish speakers checked out graphic novels and used the pictures to decode the story, but they were not growing in their reading comprehension and were not particularly engaged. Therefore, last year we purchased our first library books in Spanish, and when the students saw these books in their own language, their faces absolutely lit up! Through these Spanish edition books, Hispanic students feel a sense of belonging in the library and are able to discover the love of reading. The problem is we only own a handful of Spanish edition books, and there is always a waiting list for these highly popular Diario de Greg (Diary of Wimpy Kid) and Diario de Nikki (Dork Diaries) books. We simply need more books and a greater variety to support our ESL population of 61 students. The list of high interest books was also generated using a survey of our Spanish speaking students. Our goal is for these students to continue to grow as a readers as they are simultaneously learning to speak and read in English and to feel a sense of inclusion within our school of 841 students.
