My class is an ESL Intermediate class, grades 9 -12, at a low performing high school. My students are mostly refugees who have come from countries such as Thailand, Burma, Nepal, Somalia, Kenya, Congo, Iraq, Jordan, Puerto Rico, and Cuba to the United States within the past 2 to 3 years. My students have come to a new country with little to no knowledge of English as their native peers are thinking about college, taking the SATs, and reading Pride and Prejudice in English class. For the most part, school in their refugee camp meant sitting under a tree listening to the teacher or sitting in a small school house reciting a story. Literacy was not stressed and the majority of my students cannot read or write in their native language.
