Learning About the Great Depression Through Monopoly
Funded Nov 28, 2008I cannot tell you have grateful I am that you have chosen to fund our classroom project. I am so excited that my dream of making our unit on the Great Depression really engaging will actually become a reality for my students with the help of The World's Most Famous Game - And How It Got That Way and 7 Monopoly boards. We do not have access to resources that many schools have, and it is so humbling that donors like you are willing to help my students. After all, history means nothing unless we can connect it to things we know and interact with in our own lives. Monopoly is one of the things I know my students will be curious about and wonder why the game relates to the Great Depression. I cannot thank you enough. Thank you again for supporting my students”

Developing Map Skills and Encouraging Creativity
Funded Feb 5, 2009I am so thankful for your kind donation to my students. It is always a challenge to gather resources, and my students are ecstatic to be given exciting resources to help them learn even more.
The resources you donated (laminated maps of Washington, DC, a color printer, and supplemental reading materials) have already begun to impact my classroom. We have started working on our map skills, and most of my students said they have never been asked to read a map. In the past, they would have had to give directions with "left" or "right" cues. It broke my heart that they didn't understand the cardinal directions. With our maps, we were able to use dry erase markers to circle places on the map they found, discuss how to give directions, examine a map scale, find locations using the index, and so much more. I could easily assess their understanding this way. It felt so good to teach them these skills that most of us take for granted. It was something very tangible and relevant to them, and they really took an interest. Many of my students do not travel far from their homes, so the maps opened up their eyes to a whole new part of their city they otherwise wouldn't learn about. Thank you for giving my students this gift.
They have also read excerpts from the two supplemental reading books that were purchased. They were amazed that they didn't have to read from their textbook and really enjoyed looking through the pictures of their city that were in the books. Unfortunately, the textbooks that are used in DC History are written on a college level and are incredibly above their reading level. These supplemental reading materials are instrumental in making sure my students are both challenged and reading appropriate material.
Thank you again for making it possible for my students to learn more about their community through these resources. My students are looking forward to creating their Washington, DC from A to Z books at the end of the year! We feel very blessed and honored.

Funded Dec 16, 2008I cannot thank you enough for your gracious donation. I am so grateful there are people like you who care enough about my students to give them the resources that many schools take for granted. If I wanted to use an LCD projector, I used to have to reserve the only working one in the building weeks in advance. Unfortunately, even that LCD projector wasn't always reliable. Having our own LCD projector permanently in the classroom will benefit my students tremendously. I have already started thinking of amazing things I can do with your donated LCD projector to enhance both US and DC History. My students will be able to actually interact with important moments in our nation's history in a way a normal textbook cannot do. They can watch clips of movies, famous speeches, important news clips, see photos, etc. I can show them more visuals to stimulate their interest and cater more to the visual learners (most of my students), give them more interactive notes, and play review games. This is just the beginning. I cannot wait to tell my students about our new gift. They are going to be so thrilled. Thank you from the very bottom of my heart for enhancing my classroom instruction. I don't know how to properly thank you for such a huge resource you have given to my students”

Funded Aug 28, 2008Dear Wonderful Donor,
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I really cannot thank you enough. When I just received the email, I nearly cried. It means so much to me that someone cares so much about my students and their education. They will absolutely LOVE reading Warriors Don't Cry when we get to the civil rights unit. There's something so moving about the memoir and I know they will really latch onto its message.
This year I am really working hard to integrate more reading (outside of their U.S. History textbook) to really engage them and get them reading more (and not just in English class). Literacy skills are so important to my students in Washington, DC, so thank you for giving them this gift. Without this donation, I would have had to go to Kinko's to copy the book for all of my classes, and even then, we would probably only be able to read excerpts. Words cannot express my extreme gratitude. I look forward to sending you pictures and notes from them in the coming months!
Sincerely,
One Incredibly Grateful Teache”

Preserving Oral History In Anacostia
Funded Apr 1, 2008I really cannot thank you enough for this gracious gift for my students. With these tape recorders, my students can get even more involved in hearing the history that their parents, grandparents, other familiy members, and community leaders have lived through in Washington, DC. When I did this project in the past, my students always said they wished they had the means to capture what their interviewees said so they could remember even the small details. Their stories were amazing! The students presented thier interviewee's life in front of the class telling stories about the civil rights struggle, the riots, personal accounts of discrimination, segregation at the Tidal Basin...amazing stories that need to be preserved. I really cannot thank you enough for giving my students the opportunity to capture their own history on tape. I have already established a partnership with the Smithsonian Institute to help me with providing my students the best possible research experience! Thank YOU for making this possible”

The Legacy of Frederick Douglass
Funded Dec 21, 2007I cannot thank you enough for funding my proposal on DonorsChoose.org. Having a class set of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass will allow my students to have access to a written work every student should be reading in high school. Although my students are all African American and live in a community rich in history, particularly during the abolitionist movement, most of my students do not know what the abolitionist movement was or why it was important. This primary source will allow them to experience the horrors of slavery from the words of a former slave, which will put slavery in a completely different context for them. I hope to take them on a trip to the home of Frederick Douglass while reading the text, too. I thank you so much for your generosity, and I look forward to my students discovering the powers of this text in the coming months”
