We serve a population of students with high intellectual promise from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. In AP Environmental Science, I serve 73 students. Some students (11) also pursue an Independent Research Project in partnership with the Pontchartrain Institute of Environmental Sciences. A 42% minority for this specific group of biology students is much lower than the school's 59%. Last year, we tried to attract young ladies to the science field, as well as minority students. Female scientists were invited for career day as well as "minority" scientists. We now have a high ratio of females (68%) in the Environmental Science AP group (73), as well as the Independent Research Group (10).
