I have never created a Donors Choose project before, but I thought this year would be a good year to begin accepting the reality that I can't personally finance these supplies year after year. So I'm asking for your support, community members! All the supplies I listed are what I would need to purchase in a typical academic school year. I work in a school building that supports a student population of nearly 90% students of color, and 70% of our students qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch.
Something I've been needing for quite a while and haven't been able to afford is a writing easel for small group work with my Newcomer English Language Learners, as well as large post-it poster paper which I use for group presentation projects in all of my classes.
The bulk of what I need support with is purchasing snacks for my growing, hungry learners. Many of my young people experience food insecurity and often do not have enough to eat once they go home. Providing students with an extra snack before they go home, or in the morning if they missed breakfast, can be the difference between homework being complete, or a test being finished with confidence and brain power. I have a "food cabinet" that students must ask to access if they need a snack. Snacks may seem like such an unimportant, or perhaps indulgent thing to provide students, however, after having a student faint in my classroom because she went hungry since the evening before, and seeing young people fall asleep on desks because of unstable access to food, I know that snacks are critical to keeping our youth present, focused, and ready to learn. Please support this endeavor!
