Our school is a full Title I school, with nearly 2/3 of our students living in poverty. Our area is largely rural, but within reach of urban areas. Due to this geography, we have ongoing partnerships with regional Makers and have a Maker Club at our school. This allows us to expose students to career options they may not have otherwise considered. Many of our students struggle to learn math and science, as evidenced by our most recently released standardized test scores. Unless they can clearly see how the learning connects to their lives and their futures, the math remains abstract. This continues a cycle for our students whose parents also struggled to learn math. Because of this, we use Making as a vehicle for building community around math and science. Making allows our students a creative outlet and it gives purpose to the math and science we ask them to do. Making also helps communication skills, as we expect students to share their learning with others.
