"I would love to read about different cultures, math skills, and many more. You have to be smart because it helps you later in life. I want to learn to be more and more smart so I can be a very intelligent doctor", writes one of my students. This student, who is three years behind in reading, is one of the eighth grade students I teach at Warren G. Harding Middle School. My eighth graders are insightful, wise, energetic people who are affected by one particularly plaguing disadvantage: they are from a low-income community. 74% of our students at Harding receive free lunches and our resources are lacking. Most students come in reading at least two years below grade level, some as many as 5 years below. But like every eighth grader, my students have enormous dreams and they are ready to start the journey of fulfilling them.
